BROCHARD'S odyssey for no less than Ulysses' fabled voyages is an odyssey taking him from the Great North of Canada to the deserts of the American Southwest, from the Vieux Carre of New Orleans to the elemental beauties of Old Mexico, from the tropical jungles and rain forests of Central and South America to the formalized loveliness of the Far East, from the meditative calm of a monastery garden in Kyoto to the vivid colour and turbulence of the Indian scene ...all these, and more, have been sanctuaries of Brochard in his eternal quest, which is the quest of every artist worthy of attention for a greater purity and simplicity, a deeper meaning.
Each sojourn has provided Brochard with new perspectives and insights and has added its imprint, its modifying influence to a style that from the first has always been marked by a bold, vivid, imaginative use of color and line, and an almost in-depth, sculptural quality of painting and drawing. The necessities of circumstance that arose while doing his murals in Brasilia supplied the impetus to create an added dimension, the use of relief in the form of semi-sculptured steel embodied in the texture and design of his works. Never massively applied, but integrated so as to form a harmonious and provocative statement, these "oil-steel" paintings project line and shadow beyond the limitation of the picture's frame.
With more than thirty one-man exhibitions, including several retrospective shows, in various parts of the world, and paintings in many museums and important collections, Brochard could justly lay claim to having "arrived" in the fullest sense of the word. But this is a claim that he, as an artist, would be and rightly so most reluctant to accept if it should signify an end to searching, to seeking, exploring. living, and recreating that gusto for living in graphic, dramatic forms.
For, as the critic Jacobo Glantz has said in regard to him: "Brochard is a genuine talent with an artistic vision that defies comparison, difficult to catalogue in one school or another ...whose imagination and personality fortunately reinforce his unquestioned mastery, bringing both together in one harmonious whole."
