Fenton Glass
The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. and John W. Fenton in an old glass factory in Martins Ferry, Ohio, United States.
Located in Williamstown, West Virginia, Fenton Art Glass is among the world's foremost producers of handmade art glass. From its modest roots as a glass decorating company in 1905, Fenton has progressed and become renowned for innovative colors and decorative treatments on pressed and blown glassware.
Fenton was the first and largest producer of carnival glass, producing many different pieces in over 150 patterns. They were well known for quality, and were among a very few makers who made red carnival glass.
After interest for carnival glass waned in the late 1920s, Fenton quit producing it for many years, but due to a resurgence in its popularity, Fenton produces carnival glass today.
Fenton Glass Baskets
Each Fenton basket bears an individual "handler's mark". The highly skilled handler attaches the handle and stamps his personal mark. This handler's mark is his alone, thus each Fenton basket can be traced back to the craftsman who created it. Featured below are the handler's marks, accompanied by handlers' employment dates.
